How was life for you growing up?

Dr. Bev Browning: “Fractured, fragmented, stressful. Born to dysfunctional parents. Raised for the first 13 years of my life by older very strict, but loving paternal grandparents. No loving relationship with maternal grandparents”.

Did you grow up in the church?

Dr. Bev Browning: “Yes, Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church in Flint, Michigan. When you hear the word religion what comes to your mind? Order, regiment, non-flexible, antiquated attitudes toward women, overbearing, intrusive–at least for Black churches. Sad, but true. Definite turn-offs!”

Why do you think that they youth lose faith and don’t know God?

Dr. Bev Browning: “Because “preaching the fear of hell” and “constantly begging for money” turns off the young and intelligent old. Also, seeing Christians shun other Christians, men in the church having babies with women they are not married to, and failures in the church leader(s) are a turnoff. No role models here at all”.

What are other avenues that you think would benefit the youth?

Dr. Bev Browning: “Engagement in multi-racial and cultural missions”.

Dr. Bev Browning: “Heal the sick”.

Describe Jesus in one word?

Dr. Bev Browning: “Heart”

If there was one character in the bible that you could relate to, who would it be and why?

Dr. Bev Browning: “Esther, because she was brave and bold and demonstrated life/death courage”.

What is your favorite verse in the bible and why?

Dr. Bev Browning: “John 14:2 In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? For me, rooms are churches. There is room in heaven for every denomination, race, gender, everyone! No screening out because of earth-created labels or discriminations!”
